John is the first child of John B. and Maria/Mary Pesch. John Peter is recorded as Jean Pierre on the 1850 census for Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. John left home with his brother Peter at an early age, (around 1864-1865). The story is told that John had done something that made his Dad angry and knew that he was going to get a whipping, probably with a “trace chain” so he and his younger brother, Peter, hid in the corn field until after dark. They then persuaded their sisters to throw their clothes out the window to them and they left home. He made his way to Illinois where he met and later married Leuhetta, as her family called her; some records list her as Louetta, John and Leuhetta left Illinois in 1881 for the Western parts of the country. They settle a while around Loomis, Nebraska before moving further west and settled permanently at Yuma, Colorado. Many events and records of the activities and experiences of their family are recorded and presented by other members of this family through out the book.
It wasn’t until 1992 that the fourth generation knew of the where a bouts of Uncle John’s family. All that most of us had learned from our parents was,” we have an uncle, Peter’s brother, that went west and we don’t know where or what ever happened to them”. We are sure happy that we were able to track them down and meet them at last, Thanks to Cousin Lula Pesch Shipman and her saving her father and grandfathers old trunks.

Alice is the sixth child of John and Leuhetta Pesch. Alice and her sister Amy married brothers. Alice and Walter settled in Nebraska. They have eight children, Luhetty, Susie, Ella, Margaret, Robert, Clarice, Jessie, Betty.
Through a purchasing relinquishment, Alice acquired her own land north of Yuma, Colorado in 1889. She taught school for two or three years. After she and Walter married, they lived for a time on Walters homestead, then built a new house on Alice’s land and lived there. In 1925 the family moved to Ft. Morgan, Morgan, Colorado. All eight children were born in Colorado and with the exception of Ella, living near Ft. Morgan all later moved to Nebraska.
From Ft. Morgan the family moved in 1935 to a farm south of Sutherland, Nebraska. A later move took them into the sand hills of northeast of North Platte (Salisbury lace), then in 1943 to a place in the valley near the North Platte River (Seyboldt place).
Liking the sand hills, they decided that was where they wished to live and together with their son, Robert and his wife, Marie, bought land in northern McPherson and southern Hooker counties, from Hugh and Louelva Priest, moving there in the spring of 1945. Both families lived in the large sod house on the place, dividing the long room across the middle, with Bob and Marie living on the east end. During the summer of 1946 a new sod house for Walter and Alice was constructed, with the help of Marie’s brother, Clarence Jackson. Building materials were quite scarce because of the war and defense needs, so it took some ingenuity to finish the house, but it proved to be a pleasant home, where all the children enjoyed visiting with their parents and where grandchildren delighted in coming to spend some time with “Gram and Pop”. One of their favorite pastimes was hunting arrowheads in the many sand blowouts.
During the first few years of living on the place, the road to Tryon was quite difficult to travel at times. Especially during the winter when the snow drifted into it, It was necessary to open and shut wire gates, several of them, before reaching the regular road to Tryon, which in itself was a series of humps and hollows. Mail service was a bit irregular at times, involving a series of sand hill trails from the Shimmin Ranch to the Musser Ranch, to find our mailbox nearly two and a half miles from the house. It was later moved to within a mile, then eventually the route was changed to follow up the valley past the place, from east to west-a huge improvement! During the time following the blizzard 0f 1949, the mail was dropped from an airplane hired by Bob Cotton, to provide us with much desired papers and letters.
In order to meet expenses the first several years we milked a big herd of cows, shipping the cream at North Platte depot to a creamery in Minnesota. Together with keeping laying hens for eggs to trade for groceries in North Platte, raising gardens and potatoes, and using native fruits (sand cherries, plums, choke-cherries) and butchering our own beef, sometimes pork (and always chickens) we began to feel more financially secure. At first we rented frozen food lockers in North Platte, but eventually acquired our own freezers and refrigerators after REA lines were built into the country. Prior to REA we had a battery operated light plant for lighting the house and small appliances. Electricity has made modernization possible.
Alice and Walter celebrated their 50th anniversary in June 1958, in the Shimmin home, welcoming old friends, relatives and many neighbors. Walter passed away in 1958. Alice continued living alternately in her sand hill home and with her daughter Susie and family near Paxton, until her death on November 5, 1975, at the Tryon home. Both are buried in Yuma, Yuma, Colorado.

Robert is the first child of Susie and Carl Zimmerman. Robert (Bob) and Peggy are proud to have grown up on farms in Paxton and Wallace, Nebraska. Bob attended University of Nebraska, Kearney, Nebraska and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1968. Upon Graduating, he volunteered for the USAF and earned his pilot wings in 1969. After leaving Nebraska, Peggy worked in Denver and Los Angeles for Continental Airlines until she and Bob married in 1969.
Bob flew many types of aircraft in his twenty years in the Air Force, but mainly piloted the C-141 Starlifter, which is a four engine jet transport. The C-141’s mission is worldwide and took him to every continent except South America. During his service in Vietnam, Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1980 Bob earned a Masters Degree in Aeronautical Science.
The Zimmerman family enjoyed many various assignments. They particularly enjoyed a three-year tour in England. Until the mid 1980’s Peggy stayed home with the children. When the children got a little older Peggy worked for Golden Grain Corporation and Intersales Marketing.
Upon Bob’s retirement from the USAF, the family moved to Montana and spent two years building a log home. Peggy took a job as assistant manager at a local sapphire mine and continued in the gem and jewelry business for the next twelve years, acquiring many certificates in gemology. Bob ran for Justice of the Peace and after passing the required state exams, served as Granite County Judge. Bob holds several volunteer positions in the county including Hunter Safety Instructor, Reserve Deputy Sheriff, City Council member, founding member of the food bank and president of the volunteer fire department.
Bob and Peggy have two children, William and Brian.

Eva is the second child of John B. and Maria Pesch. Eva was called Effie. That is the only name any of the family ever heard until I started the family research. The record of their marriage was found in the Golda Mier Library at the University of Wisconsin. Her father, on the record, was listed as John B. Pesch. Other records were found in the Public Library of Milwaukee in the Milwaukee City Directories. They rented a house at 2426 Brown Street. Later they bought a home at 2406 W. Burleigh Street, both were located in Milwaukee. Their two daughters, Rose and Frances lived in the house with them and listed as “roomers”. After George’s death the daughter Frances took possession of the house with Eva and Rose as “roomers”. Eva’s last record in the Directory was in 1940, so the assumption is that she died in that year. Rose and Frances continued to live in the house a few more years. George worked as a moulder (have also found records of a George P. Ernst as a druggist in 1889-90). Eva and George have three children, John, Rose and Frances.

Rose is the first child of Eva and George Ernst. We found this information at the Public Library in the Milwaukee City Directories. Rose was a music teacher and a manager. She lived with her parents until they died, then continued to live with her sister. The last record of Rose in the Directory was 1963. She never married.

Frances is the third child of Eva and George Ernst. We also found these records at the public Library in the Milwaukee City Directories. Frances was a “Jill” of all trades. She worked as a real estate sales person, clothing sales and grocery management. Frances assumed the ownership of the home upon her father’s death. The last entry of Frances in the City Directory was 1970. The entry in the City Directory for 1971 listed the property under the ownership of a Walter Taylor. No later records were found on Frances. It is possible that she went to a rest home in some other place but we found no such record. She never married.

Katherina also found spelled Catherine is the third child of John B. and Maria/Mary Pesch. Record of her first marriage was found in the archives at the Golda Mier Library. The record of her second marriage was found in the County Clerks Office of Moultrie County, Sullivan, Illinois. No record of death or divorce was found or records of children from either marriage have been found. The second marriage took place at the home of Peter and Paulina Pesch, in Bethany, Moultrie, Illinois. Records indicate that George A. Mitchell married his third wife, Christine Bragg, in 1884. Catherine must have died within that short span of time and if so she is probably buried some where around Bethany in Moultrie or Shelby County.
